Head of Technical Services area, supervising Cataloging, Acquisitions and Mending/Processing Sections.
*Managerial responsibilities include: working closely with Library managers to plan, to formulate policies, to implement plans and situational responses, and to monitor production; continuous writing and revision of procedures; daily supervision and training of staff (7.5 full-time equivalents, unionized) plus community volunteers; monitoring supplies ordering and some maintenance contracts; extensive committee participation in-Library (Safety, Computer Team, Publications, Space Utilization, New Building Planning, etc.) and City-wide (Safety, Career Development); and preparation of job descriptions for both exempt and classified classification studies.
*Supervises cataloging operations using fully integrated automation packages (ULISYS, Polaris) in performance of: on-going database maintenance (bibliographic record changes, subject, name & series authority file maintenance, discards, etc.); cataloging 20,000+ new titles/year; and mending 20,000+ items/year.
*Original cataloging: book, serial, sound recording, audiovisual formats; government documents; foreign language materials. OCLC, Dewey classification and LC subjects.
*Special projects: Developing authority file procedures and policies (esp. series); cataloging serials collection and devising circulation mechanisms; supervising shared database cataloging project with 5 other county municipalities (ca. 4 project employees over 4 years) (this project terminated after about 8 years, because of ILS change at Eugene); and integration of County Bookmobile holdings into City collection (18,000 titles in 10 months, without adversely affecting regular workflow).
*Coordinating massive collection changes for move to new building, including changes of all item information, move to radio-frequency-ID security and TechLogic materials movement system. Re-labeling of almost the entire collection was required by re-organization; parts are complete, parts on-going.
*Coordinating automation of acquisitions activities -- implementing ILS acquisitions system, importing on-order bib records from vendors, etc.
*Planning, coordinating and performing database maintenance tasks: item information corrections, holdings deletions, authority maintenance, etc. Item information corrections workload was very extensive due to collection changes.
